Sustainability
The fact is, before the word sustainability became a buzzword, our operation was already based on the principles of sustainability.
Reuse
Restore
Reclaim
Making the planet a better place
Rescuing furniture from skips, lessening the number of items that get sent to landfill, giving new life to old furniture using leftover fabric... all these amount up to doing quite a lot towards making the planet a better place.
However, there is always more that can be done, and the great thing about this subject becoming mainstream is that frameworks and guidelines are developed to support us in doing more in a meaningful manner.
So what more are we doing?
We are now aiming for each piece to be given a life that is made up of 60-90% percent recycled, reused or reclaimed materials.
In practical terms, this translates to using:
wood and MDF that is reclaimed
new wood that is FSC certified
cradle to cradle foam made from recycled elements
sustainably produced and sourced wool and fillings
Fabrics that are made from sustainable wool, recycled bottles, and bio-compostable components
We promise to push the boundaries of eco design.
So whether we are bringing back to life a retro piece of furniture, or extending the life of dining chairs in a restaurant or making a newly designed armchair, we promise to push the boundaries of eco design & making as much as possible.
Of course, what makes all of this even more exciting is the current environment we are in. Every day there are more and more creatively manufactured materials that are becoming available for us to experiment with and incorporate into our pieces.
Additionally, for us, sustainability is not limited to only being environmentally friendly. The people and profit elements are equally important. With a long history of helping the more disadvantaged in the community, Jay leads us in making sure we work as a cooperative, including freelancers, crafts people and small businesses in the production of our pieces of furniture and the running of the business. We all come together to support each other and support the business to grow and reach more people.
